Mark Winkler & Mary
Foster Conklin at The Gardenia
 Mark Winkler and Mary Foster
Conklin met over a love of old songwriters, in their
case TWO GUYS FROM THE COAST- Bobby Troup (Route 66) and Matt
Dennis (Angel Eyes) and each have recorded a CD featuring their
heroes. Now they're getting together for the first time
in a few years for a special one night performance. Mark
is in the studio working on a new CD of original material and
Mary has been exploring the works of many new writers, so the
evening will be a fun collection of old and new, beyond Matt
Dennis and Bobby Troup, although they'll definitely cover those
bases. It will be as fun as a road trip in a classic Thunderbird
down Highway 1.

MARK'S LAST SHOW OF 2007
A good crowd came out to enjoy
Mark performing at Catalina Bar and Grill as part of Michael
Konik's Tasty Tuesday series on Tuesday, November 13, 2007.
He did a full set, and then a couple of tunes with the swinging
Mr. Konik. A fantastic four piece band headed by Eli
Brueggermann on piano, Ken Parks on drums, Tim
Emmons on bass and Kim Richmond on sax and flute filled
out the cast.
Mark also did some Bobby Troup
(can you say "Hungry Man"?), some Romantic Standards,
and songs from his jazz musical PLAY IT COOL - along with
a couple of Winkler premieres - including HOW CAN THAT MAKE YOU
FAT? A good time was had by all!

WINKLER JAZZ ENCORE AT THE GARDENIA A
HIT!
On Saturday, August 25, 2007
Mark Winkler returned "by popular demand" to
perform at The Gardenia. In June he packed the place
and saw many of his closest friends turned away. This time
he was joined by the Jamieson Trotter Trio. He did
a full set including many new things he's never done before in
preparation for recording a new CD later in the year. Of
course, he also did some Bobby Troup songs, standards and a couple
of numbers from "Play It Cool" as well. Everyone enjoyed
the free birthday cake - served in honor of Mark's upcoming birthday.

WINKLER JAZZ AT THE GARDENIA!
Mark Winkler performed at The Gardenia for
the first time on Saturday, June 9th, 2007 at 9:00pm. The
legendary Gardenia is West Hollywood's intimate, lovely room
- renowned for a diverse range of cabaret and jazz acts. Mark
was joined by the talented musical director of "Play It
Cool", Louis Durra and his trio. They performed
a full set - with much brand new material which Mark is testing
out as he prepares to record a new CD this fall. Of
course, he did some Bobby Troup, standards and a couple of songs
from "Play It Cool".
Recently, Don Heckman wrote in
the L. A. Times, "Winkler stands out among what appears
to be a diminishing fraternity: male jazz singers...A medley
of the Kern/Mercer standard "I'm Old Fashioned" and
the Gershwins' "Our Love Is Here to Stay" defined his
skills with ballads. Even more impressive his own "In a
Lonely Place" was a reminder that classic, American songbook-
type tunes are still being written..."

Durra, piano - Tim Emmons, bass - Ken Parks, drums

Recently, Mark Winkler performed
with the wonderful Marilyn Harris for her CD release party
at Catalina's Bar and Grill. A few months later, he had
a blast with Sweet Baby Jai at the same room. He did an
evening of the music of Bobby Troup and Matt Dennis with Mary
Foster Conklin in New York at The Triad and then in
Santa Monica at The Vic.
In January of 2005 Mark hosted a fabulous
panel at IAJE in Long Beach (see picture above) entitled
"Adding Pages to the Great American Songbook" that
featured Lorraine Feather, Marilyn Harris, Mike
Melvoin, Ben Sidran and Brock Walsh.
Watch this space for more upcoming shows.
Mark
Winkler Quotes:
"His
original tunes already sound like standards...Winkler is destined
to become an important American composer as more people understand
what a canny writer he is. As an entertainer,
he's simply marvelous!"
